Acupuncture, Headaches & Migraines

Acupuncture is an ancient form of Chinese Medicine.  It involves re-balancing the body’s life energy, called Qi (pronounced “chi”).  This is carried out by the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the skin.  There are many different reasons that our balance of Qi becomes disrupted.  Stress, physical and/or emotional traumas, hormonal imbalances are all factors.  When our Qi gets knocked off balance, physical symptoms can man with headacheensue. Acupuncture works by encouraging the body to heal and re-balance itself.  It also reaches a deeper level, affecting our mind and spirit.  After treatment many people report that they feel an overall sense of calmness and wellbeing.

A very common sign that our natural energy is out of sync is the recurrence of headaches.  There are many different types of headache. They afflict both young and old, and affect people in different ways.  Migraine headaches for example can last from several minutes to several days.  Vision can be affected, and sufferers often experience stomach problems, including nausea and vomiting.

Headaches can be triggered by many factors such as stress, tiredness, food intolerance, blocked sinuses, noise or bright lights. Some women experience headaches (particularly migraines) on a monthly basis as the body struggles to cope with hormone imbalances.  Headaches such as migraine can also be hereditary.

How can acupuncture help?

"As a previous migraine sufferer myself, I know how the affliction of this very painful problem can blight a person’s life," says Linda Colclasure, the Practice's acupuncturist, "After a course of acupuncture treatment many years ago, my migraines ceased completely.  Not only that, but I was aware that I felt much better in myself, both physically and mentally."

An acupuncturist will not just treat the symptoms of a migraine, but will look deeper, in order to eliminate the root cause of the problem.  By taking a detailed history of a person’s health, eating habits and lifestyle we can begin to make a holistic diagnosis.  The location of pain, the triggers and frequency of the headache are taken into account.  It is very important to check that the pain does not have more serious implications. We then take a number of pulses on each wrist.  We look at the tongue, as this can give us further information about the balance of energy within the body.  The emotional and physical appearance of a person is also taken into account in forming an overall picture.  No two people are treated in exactly the same way.

"When someone comes to see me complaining of recurrent headaches, I see it as a wonderful opportunity to try and give to them the same positive outcome I experienced myself. My life is now headache free!"
