Acupuncture and Fertility
No matter how stressful life can be, it only becomes more stressful if there is difficulty in achieving a pregnancy. It is now estimated that one in six couples have difficulty conceiving. In up to 40% of cases there is a male fertility issue. There is a great deal of research suggesting that acupuncture has a valuable role in increasing the chances of a positive outcome for natural conception and a healthy pregnancy.
In order to achieve a healthy pregnancy, it is necessary to look at the lifestyles of both partners. Overall health, stress, diet and sleep are important factors to look at. If preparation for conception can begin months in advance, then couples can ensure an optimal start to the pregnancy. Healthy sperm and eggs ensure a good quality embryo. Providing a healthy constitution is a way in which we can give our children the healthiest possible start to life.
Female Infertility
For many women, the first thing that needs addressing is the menstrual cycle. For instance if a woman has been taking the contraceptive pill for a number of years, problems can ensue if the body has trouble adjusting after the pills are stopped. Acupuncture treatments can help to restore the normal balance of the hormones. Many women suffering from problems such as pre-menstrual tension, polycystic ovary syndrome and endometriosis have benefited greatly from acupuncture treatment. If a woman is failing to ovulate each month, or the periods are irregular or very painful, acupuncture can help to address these problems naturally.
Male Infertility
Sperm counts have been declining at a rapid rate over recent years. The average male sperm count dropped 45% between 1940 and 1990. The volume of semen has also dropped accordingly. This equates roughly to a currently 30 year old man having a sperm count which is only one quarter the count of the average male born in 1925. The reasons for such declining sperm counts seem to be the increased exposure to environmental pollutants, such as dioxins, pesticides, PCBs and other chemicals. Alcohol consumption and smoking have also been found to contribute to low sperm counts. Smokers are also found to have more abnormal sperm than non-smokers. As new sperm are constantly being produced, it is possible to improve the quality of these by making a few changes in a number of areas. Together with acupuncture treatment, male partners can make a significant difference to both the quality and quantity of sperm.
Assisted Reproductive Techniques
Acupuncture can be very effective working alongside treatments such as IVF, IUI and ICSI. Specific treatments can:
- Improve blood flow to the uterus
- Calm the uterus ready for implantation
- Alleviate unwanted side effects of the medical treatment
- Improve responses to hormonal stimulation
- Help to reduce the emotional stress that accompanies these procedures
