Foot Zone Therapy

What is Foot Zone Therapy?

foot therapyFoot  zone therapy is based on the premise that energy flows through the body in meridians from the brain to the feet. Every organ and cell has a representative point on the foot and when pressure is applied, the brain sends a signal to the corresponding part of the body to assist healing and restore balance.

Meridians are pathways of positive and negative energies. Disruptions of energy flow causes the formation of uric acid crystals in the corresponding area of the foot. Any area of discomfort is an indication of a blockage.

By pressing, rubbing and manipulating the surface and deep tissue of the foot , the trapped energy is released and the meridians can flow freely again.

Though it's origin was in reflexology, foot zone therapy has been found to be a signal system rather than a reflex system. Through the application of direct pressure to the various “zones” of the feet the foot zone therapist observes the foot and interprets the messages it conveys through discoloration, spots, tenderness and pain. When a signal point is triggered within a certain zone, a message goes to the tissue or organ affected, through a reflex arc to the spinal cord and then to the brain. Discomfort is experienced in the areas of imbalance where healing is needed.

How does it work?

A complex signal system located in the feet connects to every organ and cell in the body. Foot zone therapy always stimulates every organ and renews the cell system in each treatment. Zone therapy is a holistic approach, which recognizes that all of the body’s cells and organs make up one giant, complex, interactive organism. So zone therapy encourages the body’s natural healing capability by regulating blood circulation, hormone production and circulation, lymph circulation, digestion, elimination and the function of the autonomic nervous system.

What to expect during treatment

After a full consultation, the therapist will cleanse and oil the feet. The feet will then be massaged gently at first, then with more pressure until any tenderness is found. Once an imbalance is located, pressure is applied and the area is massaged until the sensitivity is gone. The therapist will then use the tip of the thumb to 'open up' the zones of the feet. The treatment lasts for 30-40 minutes.

What are the benefits?

As well as regulating the functions of the body, zone therapy is a very effective technique for pain release.
