What is Indian Head Massage?
Champissage or ‘champi’ is an original Indian word meaning head massage. It has been practised in India for
over 1000 years and has a long tradition of use by women as a way to help keep their hair strong and in beautiful condition by stimulating blood flow to the scalp, thus nourishing the hair roots. A variety of herbs, spices and oils with known healing properties were used in the process, which gave the added benefit of relieving a number of common scalp conditions.
Indian head massage was brought to the UK in the 1970’s by Narendra Mehta who was disappointed that massage was not used when having his hair cut. In 1978 he returned to India to study the Indian head massage techniques and extended the therapy to also massage the face, neck, shoulders and upper arms.
It is believed that three of the major energy centres of the human body can be found in and around the head. These are the crown, brow, and throat. Acting on a physical, mental and subtle level. Indian head massage stimulates these important energy centres, so helping the important balance of energy within the body, which in turn provides a sense of well being and relaxation.
What to expect during treatment
You will be given a full consultation. Oils are optional in Indian head massage. If treatment is performed without oils you can remain fully clothed and light clothing would be recommended. If oil is preferred, upper clothing can be removed.
Treatment begins with the upper back, where a firm yet gentle pressure is applied with a combination of deep massage and pressure points which help to relax the muscles. Moving onto the shoulders and upper arms further releases the common spots for holding stress and tension. Then working into the neck, moving up to the head using techniques to stimulate, relax and revive the scalp promoting healthy hair.
